A Simple SEO Checklist for Small Business Websites
You don't need a 40-point audit to start ranking. These are the fundamentals that matter most for a small business website.

Get the technical basics right first
Before worrying about keywords, confirm the site loads quickly on mobile, uses HTTPS, has a clean URL structure, and doesn't block search engines by accident (check your robots.txt). Google's PageSpeed Insights and Search Console are free and will surface most of this in minutes.
A submitted, error-free XML sitemap and a working robots.txt matter more than most business owners realize — without them, some of your pages may simply never get indexed.
Match your pages to real search intent
Every important page should target a specific thing people actually search for — a service, a location, a problem. Use Google's autocomplete and 'People also ask' boxes as free keyword research: they show you the exact phrasing your customers use.
One page per intent works better than one page trying to rank for everything. A dedicated '/services/website-design' page will consistently outrank a generic '/services' page for that specific search.
Don't skip on-page fundamentals
Each page needs a unique title tag and meta description, one clear H1, and a logical heading structure below it. These are small details, but they're also the first thing Google — and prospective customers scanning search results — actually read.
If you're local, treat Google Business Profile as page one
For most small businesses, an optimized Google Business Profile drives more visibility than the website itself. Complete every field, add real photos, and respond to every review. It's the highest-leverage hour you can spend on SEO this month.
